New Year Prayer

As we start the new year, I say this little prayer ...

May all living things, all creatures, all persons be void of enmity, disease and grief, and may they guard themselves happily.

May all beings be happy and secure; may their minds be contented.

"Ee char kuih"

Our new year at the temple began with prayers at dawn for world peace and wellbeing of all mankind.  The prayers were a little longer this time and by the time we finished, everyone was famished!  A couple of the nuns had relieved Head Nun of the chore of making breakfast and we soon settled down to porridge with braised nuts and tofu.  It was delicious even for me, having been in the temple for so long and gotten used to the food served here.  Ah Ying came a little later with "ee char kuih" (a Chinese breakfast item of fried dough in rolls) which is often served with porridge and makes a great combination.

Every meal always begins with a thanksgiving prayer and sometimes it is followed by a short spiritual discussion to ruminate on while we eat.  This time Ah Ying was the one who raised a question.

"Head Nun, what is the best way to start the new year?"

Head Nun smiled, then said, "Start it with gratitude.  Be thankful for all this good food we have on our table everyday and that you're not among the thousands of people who are starving in the world. Also be thankful to those who helped you on your life journey and brought you to the lotus feet of the Lord Buddha."

"Secondly, start it with kindness.  Be always ready to serve and help those who are in distress."

"And thirdly, start it with forgiveness.  Forgive those who have hurt you, don't hang on to anger for it kills you, not the one who hurt you."

Well, it was good advice and for as long as I can remember, Head Nun has been patiently giving the same advice year in and year out!  Whether we practise it or not is another thing!

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

With Metta,

Da
