Once when
Head Nun was talking on this subject, one of the younger nuns asked, “But Head
Nun, how can we do a good deed every day?
We are confined to the walls of this temple and there’s nothing much we
can do!”
Head Nun
smiled and said, “Doing a good deed doesn’t mean that you have to do something
exceptional like saving a drowning man.
If you look around you, there’s always something “good” to be done. For example, look at Vege Cat here. He’s looking rather down, so giving him a
kind word of encouragement or a compliment to cheer him up is a good deed. Or if you see me struggling with my prayer
books on my way to the prayer hall, you can offer to carry them for me. See what I mean? Good deeds can be simple acts in daily
life. Of course if you can extend your
help beyond home and workplace, all the better.
The important thing is to cultivate compassion in your hearts and treat
every living being with loving kindness."
